2006 - 2007 Archived News

6/17/2007      The year end party was a perfect end to a great season.  Thank you Mark and Carla Longo for opening

your home to the crew family.  This is another event that had many helping hands with food, desserts

a trailer, a boat, and a priest.  It was great.  Thank you for the coaches gifts, we appreciate your kindness

and generosity.  Have a safe summer.

not able to attend the meeting.  I am not involved with summer crew so please direct all of your questions

to Aileen.  If you need to talk with me or Katie please feel free to contact us at any time.

6/7/2007          Almost done...please note the year end crew party has a slight change that will make things easier for

you all.  Originally we planned on having the boat commencement and Mass at WS & based on parking

issues at the club we moved everything to the Longo's house.  With that said, be at the Longo's house by

5:05 for a 5:15pm mass lead by Fr. James Erving of Holy Angels Parish.  Awards and food to follow.

Please RSVP to Carla Longo or Maria Dines as soon as possible.  See you then.

5/31/2007        Summer Crew - a quick insight into summer crew.  My three children did summer crew every year and

in all cases they loved it.  They have a unique opportunity to meet new kids and experience the best of the

best in terms of rowing.  The experience from the summer crew is something that your daughter can bring

to the school program in the fall.  Here is the information I have from WS.

                                 Jr. A & B Women-        http://www.wsrc.org/WSRC%20SUMMER%20ROWING%202006%20info.doc

If you know an incoming HAA student that is interested in rowing, please encourage them to join

the WSRC crew camp - http://www.wsrc.org/Learn_To_Row/learn_to_row.html

5/31/2007       The Pittsford regatta has been cancelled from West Side.  As of today practices are over.  We have (3)

boats racing in the Canadian Nationals this Friday 6/1.  Dismissal after first period.  Athletes need their

student ID with them at all times this weekend.  A group of parents will be leaving the HAA parking lot at

9:00'ish and will drive to the Henley course and proceed to weigh athletes in.  Coach Nugent will be at the

Peace Bridge at 9:10 waiting to drive up with you all.  We have plenty of time to weigh in, rig our boats and

prepare for the races.  For those athletes that have never been to the Henley course we will have time to

outline course strategy and get a good perspective of the entire course.  Tonight eat plenty of complex

carbohydrate foods to help sustain energy.  Drink at least 4 glasses of water between this evening and

tomorrow morning before your first class.  Keep focused on getting your studies done early and getting to

bed as early as you can.  Last race as Freshmen, Sophomores and as Juniors...make it count.

Passion and the WILL to WIN...make it a habit.  Confidence and courage to be your best!

****the year end party details are almost finalized...stay tuned****

Boat assignments will be determined on Thursday for V - Novice are set.

5/29/2007       Sorry for the long delay between site updates.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank every parent that helped with the food tent on Monday for

the Fontana Regatta.  Carla thanks for taking the initiative and getting the parents to join in and

help as part of varsity was out of town.

Again, the coaches and the school are grateful for the support from the parents and the community

in the purchase of our new boat.  It is an amazing shell that has truly inspired our athletes to

perform.  We will have a more formal event at the year end party recognizing the new boat and a

formal recognition of the naming rights and the seat donations.

Congratulations to Sarah Sullivan who has dedicated 4 years to this team and her school it has

been a pleasure.  We all wish Sarah a happy and healthy future.

Congratulations to the Jr. Ltwt. 4 and the Frosh 4 in advancing to the finals and the Frosh 4 took a

2nd place finish in their finals.

Congratulations to the Jr. 4 at Nationals for an excellent couple of races.  In terms of experience,

this race was huge.  The girls truly came together and performed to their highest levels.  We are

                   very proud of them.

5/18/2007       The Welland Regatta information...click on RED link above.  Directions to the course click link above.

Saturday - athletes need to be at the course at the WS trailer by 9:00am

                                    Sunday - Jr 4+ @ 6:45am - all other athletes at course by  7:30am

5/17/2007       Congratulation to the Jr 4 for making the National Championships in NJ next weekend.  This is truly an

opportunity that was earned!  Based on the competitive finals in Saratoga and the other races that

feed into the selection for Nationals, a committee reviewed our petition and accepted the boat.

The 2007 NYS Championship regatta is viewed as a success for HAA.  The experience for these girls is

critical in learning more about this sport and themselves.  The harder you work the luckier you will  seem

to be.  Jr 4 had a good heat time and advanced to the semi finals and a great semi final race was a break-                         through race and opened their eyes to what pulling hard is really all about.  The finals were pure power &

we could not be more pleased with the performance.  We stayed with the best because we are among the

best for the eastern part of the country...next weekend is evidence of that.  The Ltwt 4 placed in the finals &

we feel it really gave the boat something to commit to.  The Frosh 4 slammed a great race with limited time

on the water.  I know personally, because we asked, that each athlete at the regatta for HAA walked home

with something in their heart that was not there just days prior.  I am so impressed with the coxies to have

a near error free weekend.  In the perspective of the coaches we are so pleased and proud of the races

because we know we are on the right track here and we continue to move forward with the program.  We

like the energy of the parents and the level of commitment of the athletes.  Congratulations.

Nice job on the tent and the food - it looks like parents have been working hard at making things happen

with a healthy tent!  The coaches are very happy to see the parents helping and hope to see more athletes

taking on jobs at the tent to help setup and breakdown.  They take oars and a motor boat out and in every

                         practice...they are very capable!

A final note: the new boat is absolutely fantastic and thank you all for making it possible.  Oars have

been ordered and we are looking at a mid June delivery.  Many factors evolved in the delay...they are

coming and will be ready for the fall season!

5/16/2007       PRACTICE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK:

Thursday PM (5:30-7:30p)- Spears, Emma S, Taylor, Kalya, Stessing, O'Rourke, Christa Dines, Katie R,

Amanda J, Guiliana, Jess D, Monica, MK, Kristen, Ashley, Catey D

Friday AM- both JR Light 4's (freshman) and all varsity

Friday PM- All Novice, Beth Prentiss, Ashley Prentiss, Sally, Spears

                         Saturday (11-1)- All Novice

5/9/2007          We were very pleased the race went off for the JB as it helps measure us against some of the best crews

in the US.  The novice crew worked it out considering the situation of Kayla having her seat come off its

track.  Great job to maintain her composure and help the crew all that she could.   The Varsity ltwt 4 gave

the crowd their monies worth by that final sprint to the finish...this was the second boat that gave the other

crews a helping hand.  A failed start gave the other crews a 7-10 second head start.  The Jr. 4 had their

work cut out for them in competing with Nardin & Buffalo Seminary crews.  Again a huge surge in the end

was not enough.  I was told by more than one coach that their sprints were amazing.  The Sr. 4 was coxed

by Kelly Boyak and she slammed a perfect course.  This was a boat that never practiced together & made

the best of an extremely competitive category.  I am convinced that  our girls are extremely competitive.

With that said, there is no room for error in this sport.  Sunday we had enough of them to keep us out of a

medal.  Rowing is a complex sport and it demands focus.  This is unlike any other sport in the world.  We

are as strong as our weakest rower...challenge yourself not to be the weakest rower in your boat.  We

raced like champions with the Ltwt 4 and Jr. 4...keep it up!  Peak this weekend!

We have added practices at night and in the morning to help hammer out some simple issues and get

the confidence level back up!  Girls manage your time with home, school and crew.  Very proud of you all.

Next weekend we head off the Welland, Ontario.  The race is 2000m unlike the 1500m in the US.

5/4/2007           The regatta is on for Sunday...please click above (in red) for information on times.  Seat selection will be

assigned at practice tomorrow.  Bring some sun block and freshmen parents click the "survival kit" link

on the top right side of this page.

5/1/2007          The ice is concentrated at the locks and as the wind shifts the ice moves back towards the peace bridge.

The regatta this weekend has NOT be cancelled and I will keep you posted.  States is next weekend and

final boat selection for varsity will be this week so we can concentrate on its preparation all next week.

Again, water time is precious and we need to remain focused and keep the technical quality high.  I added

some pictures and will add more each week now that we are on the water.

4/23/2007        Very impressive 2k Testing this weekend.  90% of athletes set new (PR) personal records.  Amanda tops

it all with a 7:48.4, great individual efforts from the entire team.

4/20/2007        2k's are postponed until SUNDAY!!!  We are taking advantage of the water at UB.

If we remain focused and keep the quality of our work high, we will be in good shape.

                        UB directions:

Get on the 190 - North at Porter Ave.

Take the 190-North to the 290 - East.

Take the 290 - East to Niagara Falls Blvd - North (the 2nd Niagara Falls Blvd. Exit).

Follow Niagara Falls Blvd. - North to Tonawanda Creek Road and turn Right on Tonawanda Creek

Rd. (Tonawanda Creek Rd. is the first light after the Wegman's store).

Follow Tonawanda Creek Road to Brennan Rd. and turn Left onto Brennan (Brennan will be the first

road on your left after you pass Sweet Home Rd.)

Follow Brennan until you see a sign for a Boat Launch and an entrance to a Park. The UB boathse

                        is located in Veteran's Park.

4/16/2007      Ice in the canal is still not allowing us to get on the water.  We are exploring other temporary sites, which

would necessitate practicing in the afternoon due to time constraints. Please stand by on how we will

                        proceed from Tuesday on.

Please remember that Sat (4/21) there is a 2000m erg test.  We will do some preparation as a team this

week, but each athlete should be in a ready state of mind.  This will be an important test.  We will use the

remainder of Sunday to continue boat selection - hopefully on the water.

4/10/2007      Schedule for the next week: double practice for V on Thursday.  Hope you all enjoyed the Easter weekend!

                        4/11 Varsity 6AM-8:00AM

                        4/12 Varsity 6AM-8:00AM

                        4/12 Varsity & Novice 6:30PM-8:30PM

4/4/2007         The novice practice is on a Wednesday not a Tuesday as previously posted...see below.

Today, the canal has filled up with ice chunks and is no longer rowable.  This status may change

on a day to day basis depending on temperature and wind direction.  Please come to practice

prepared for running as well as going on the water.

3/28/2007        New schedule effective this Monday April 2, 2007.

                                                    Sunday 7am-9am (with Varsity)

Please dress in layers and make sure your top layer is not a baggy pull-over...it will make rowing difficult.

3/14/2007        This Saturday will be the 1st Annual Shamrock Run - Saturday March 17th 9am-11am.  Prizes for 1st

place finishes for coxies, varsity and novice.  Green bagels after the race!  Wear green!

Thursday 3/22 is a 2k test at practice.

3/9/2007           Last weekend at the Ontario Indoor Ergatta Championships we had many reason to celebrate.  Amanda

Draksic captured her PR of 7:56 to take 5th place out of 85 lightweight rowers.  Amanda made it into the

top 10 club and she was awarded a t-shirt to prove it!  Great job Amanda.  Mary Kate and Ashley inched

closer to their personal record.  Last night MK tested again and has broken not only her PR but the 8min

barrier.  Congratulations to you both.  Some of our novice rowers created PR for themselves including a

great performance from Jess Draksic with an 8:33.5.  Freshmen Kayla and Amanda Jones are now in

the sub 9 club.  Excellent job.

Reminder: Sundays are added to the schedule and will be at HAA gym 9-10:30am.  Be prepared to run!!

3/1/2007          The athlete pre-ergatta dinner is at My Tomato Pie on Sat (3/3) Sheridan Dr. in the Northtown Plaza 6PM.

This dinner is open to the entire team and we hope to see you there.  Family style dinner - Salad, Pasta,

chicken cutlets and bread.  $10 per athlete and please RSVP to the coaches at practice.

2/26/2007        This weekend, Amanda Draksic (Jr.) and Mary Kate Frauenheim (So.) competed in Boston Sunday for

the CRASH B indoor rowing championships.  This is an international event with participants of all ages

from high school to the collegiate level and masters.  Amanda again makes a new PR of 8:01.4.  MK

moves closer to her PR with an 8:06.1.  Amanda placed 23 out of 93 in her event and Mk was 114 out of

219 in here event.  Fantastic performance from these two girls representing WS, HAA and themselves.

This weekend is the Ontario Championships on Sunday March 4 at Ridley College in St. Catherine's.

There will be selected athletes for this event but all are encouraged to come out and support the team!

2/13/2007        Practice for tonight (2/13) is cancelled per the school.  Catch up on your studies and keep warm!  We

will see you on Thursday.  In an effort to keep pace with the workouts, do a 30 min workout, treadmill or

if you don't have access to equipment, do the series of cardio workout x 6 to include j-jacks, lunge, squat

thrust and mt. climbers.  Have a good night.

A fantastic showing of support again at Anderson's from the crew families, athletes and school.  It was a

fun night.  Happy Birthday Katie Spears!

2/12/2007        Anderson's night is tonight at the Main Street store.  The Canisius HS Crewsader Erg Challange was on

Sunday.  Amanda Draksic finished 4th out of 40 in Sr. Ltwt  event...that is a PR (personal record) for the

very powerful Amanda!  She will be going to Boston on the 25th to compete at an international ergatta.

Mary Kate Frauenheim finished 4th out of 8 in a very competitive event.  Mk is maturing rapidly as a Varsity

oarswomen.  We had Ashley Prentiss and Kristen Eagleton is the Jr. Ltwt event against 26 rowers.  Ash

slammed it and placed 5th - 8 seconds out of third!  Kristen finished in the top 10 edging out some good

club competition.  In the Novice event was Jess Draksic and Katie Rusch in a field of 38 rowers.  Jess &

Katie never pulled a 2k and have recorded their PR - Jess 8:50 and Katie at a 8:54 - amazing for such

lightweights.  My son Adam had his PR of 6:56 with Coach Kinder cheering him on...I got the play by play

via mobile phone from Kinder while I was driving to Roch.  The Coaches are very pleased w/ results!

The Winter Blues Party was a huge success.  The success was not limited to a few but many helping

hands.  A great showing of support for this team from grandparents to cousins to the very cool Kinder

parents.  The numbers are not finalized and are forthcoming.  Special thanks to the organizers Maria

Dines, Pat Frauenheim, Katie Kinder with a great help from Carla Longo, Michelle Schaus, Kathy

McCrone, Dot Prentiss, Mary Sondel and Rosemary Sullivan.  A great success on the live Auction from

the very funny, and sometimes intimidating trio of Mr. Brian McCrone, Mr. Tom Miranda and

Mr. Hooddmaker.  Vito the bartender kept us entertained with wine & music with help from Jim Prentiss.

There were many families donating to this event; from gift baskets to donating beer and wine to donating

valuable time and effort, thank you all.  The folks that helped prepare the food, setup and break down, our

hats off to you!  I might as well just name every family on the team because that is who made it happen!

This type of support gives our school and the team the advantage it needs to compete and take advantage

of the opportunities we would otherwise find out of reach.

Catey and Christina Dines went to Temple University for a coxswain clinic this past weekend.  This clinic

had Mary Whipple - the Women's National Team coxie for the 8 & Mike Teti - Men's Olympic Head coach

as speakers and mentors.  The girls were able to converse with Mary and share in her knowledge and

experience.  These events and success feed off of each other.

1/10/2007        WS has not given us the final schedule and times for club usage.  We will be at HAA tonight for practice.

6:30 - 8:00.  Saturday we will be at WS...time is forthcoming.  Very Important:  To workout at WS for the

remaining weeks of winter...the club requires that all athletes pay a $20 fee.  It is imperative you bring

that tonight or the latest on SATURDAY.  If you pay by check please make it out to Westside R.C..

We will be incorporating erg workouts over the upcoming weeks.  Long steady state rows building on

                           strength thru Phase I.

1/3/2007           NO PRACTICE on Saturday...coaching certification.  Please do a 25 min. run or steady state workout.  We

have our first Ergatta on February 11, 2007!  I can see the difference in your balance and your are getting

stable...very happy and excited about that..."pieces to the puzzle".  I will see you all on Monday at HAA at

                           6:30pm-8:00pm.

12/28/2006      Practice Saturday will be at the Jewish Center - 787 Delaware Ave. in Buffalo...down the street from

Canisius High School.  I am a member so you will be my guest, you do not need a membership.  Practice

will be from 2:00 - 3:30pm.  Sorry for the change in times but we missed Wednesday and we have to stay

                           on track.

12/20/2006      It has been a good start to this season and looking forward to our progression.  This Saturday we are

meeting at Delaware Park for a run around the park.  9:00am - 10:30am.  Please make sure you are

dressed with multiple layers.  We will meet off Nottingham at the "juciery".

12/13/2006      Winter training begins at 6:30p-8:00p on Monday December 18, 2006 at Holy Angels Academy.  The

tentative schedule will be three days per week.  Mon, Wed 6:30p-8p and Sat 9am-10:30am.  Looking

forward to a championship spring season.

12/7/2006        Winter training is quickly approaching.  The coaches have been working on practice plans and we are

waiting for a schedule to be finalized.  We anticipate starting winter training December 19th if all goes

as planned.  We will let you know in a few days.  Please being a 25m steady state cardiovascular workout

every day, Sunday rest.  A good 2.5 mile run with some jumping jacks would get your 25 min in.  Enjoy!

12/7/2006        The Alumni Pancake Breakfast brought some old (good looking) faces back to Westside last month.  A

great job and thanks to Katie Kinder & Chris, Maria Dines & Family, Dave Sondel, Evan & Lindsay Nugent

Molly Kinder.  I hope that got everyone.  Some pictures...click here.

11/21/2006      Happy Thanksgiving to the entire HAA crew family.

T for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather.
H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday.
A for autumn's frosty art, and abundance of love in the heart.
N for neighbors, and November, new things and nice things to remember.
K for kitchen, kettles' croon, kith and kin expected soon.
S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that abounds.
THANKS; for joy in living and a jolly good Thanksgiving.

11/5/2006        Congratulations to our (2) Lightweight boats this weekend at Pull the Plug Regatta.  First place went to

Dines -c, Meesh, Amanda, Ashley & Kristen.  Second place went to Knab -c, Sally, Sarah, Heather & Beth.

We are extremely proud of every person on this team.  Brittany coxed the very competitive open 4+.  Moni

did a great performance at stroke as Brittany kept them together down the course.  Dines coxied the 8

in a field of high performance and we finished last.  The 8 was not our focus this season, but the chance

to race one eight this season was worth our effort.  Kelly came as an alternate coxie.  Kelly supports her

team in such a commendable manner, thank you Kelly.

Tuesday 6:00am - WSRC for our final cleanup.  Varsity crew must attend!

That is it!  Fall Season IS OVER.  More info on the winter training coming soon.

11/2/2006         Finally we have some info on the last race of the season...click link above.  We will be taking (2) 4's and

                           (1) 8.  We are very excited and hope the weather holds out for us...40's and cloudy.

Boat loading at Noon on Saturday until 1:00.

Sunday we can all meet at the Lord Amherst at 7:15am.

This morning it was 32 degrees at

the 5:45am practice.  Rowers need to layer clothing to protect themselves from this weather.  Base

layer should be a "coolmax" / "U armor"...add long sleeve tee's to that and a thin wool sweater.  Hoodies

are not recommended to provide protection and is horrible for rowing technique.  Use a hat that has ear

protection...Canadians call them touks (AE has nice ones).  They will need this for Spring time too!

Candle info will be posted as soon as we get the last forms in!

10/31/2006       Boo!  Happy HalloweenNOVICE - practice for tonight has been moved to Wed. (11/1) night.

10/30/2006       It was a wet & cold Head of the Fish regatta in Saratoga this past weekend.  Our (2) boats faired very well

considering the inclement weather.  The Jr 4+ finished ahead of St. Catherine's, City Honors, Pittsford &

                            Brighton crews.  Very proud of you girls.  The parents did another great job keeping the day manageable;

really good planning of having a tent on the water...huge!  Thank you all.

Practice schedule for Varsity this final week:  Tuesday-Friday 5:45 am.

10/30/2006       Congratulations Katie Kinder on your wedding engagement!  Wedding is planned for fall '07.

10/25/2006       Head of the Fish Regatta is this weekend...click link above.  We will be LOADING BOATS on Thursday

morning after a short workout and a good stretch.  Practice on Thursday will be at 6:00a vs. 5:45a.

You can leave any time you wish, I only ask that we all meet in the lobby of the hotel at 9:00pm Fri.

                            I made a change from 6:30 (sorry)

10/20/2006       Since we have lost so much water time due to poor weather...we are asking rowers to have practice this

Saturday and Sunday from 8-11 not 9-11.  Novice time unchanged (8-10am).

                            SAT schedule and fees http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/calenfees.html

Juniors could take advantage of the practice...I encourage all Jr's to take the test at least once this yr.

10/18/2006       I hope everyone is safe and hanging in there.  This has been an incredible time for our community.

In typical fashion WNY rolls with the punches.  I hope the next few days bring you added comfort and

                            access to basic services.

For practice on Thursday and Friday morning (this week) practice will be from 6:45am - 8:15am.

If rides are an issue, let me know - I can drive some kids to N. Buffalo if needed.

10/17/2006        PRACTICE IS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2006 @5:30pm!  Resuming normal schedule.

We would like to collect forms and money for the candle sale by this Saturday!!!

10/14/2006        WS has been closed until further notice.  Practice for Mo
